POROTITI

Porotiti

·       When the Porotiti is played (by twirling the cord until it spins) it creates a humming sound. It can be made from a variety of materials: wood, bone, stone and even cardboard.

·       The Porotiti has another name: the Kororohu.

·       The Porotiti, like the Purerehua belongs to the wind family of instruments. The Kaitiaki (guardian) of the Porotiti is Tawhirimatea, god of the winds.

·      The Porotiti was and can still be used as a form of Rongoa (medicine). Playing the Porotiti can ease arthritis. It can also be used to help children with colds and congested chests. When played over their faces and chests while they were asleep it would help clear Mucus from their sinuses.

·       The Porotiti was often used as a toy by children and adults alike. The Porotiti creates quite, soft sounds and can also be worn as pendants.

STU DUVAL

Stu Duval

Stu Duval talked to us about his newest story the Flax Cross. The story was about a boy called Red Macalister. His friend called him potato boy for short. Red took a piece of bread from a baker who threw out some stall pieces of bread. Red took the stall pieces of bread from the rubbish bin and the baker came out and saw red
McAllister eating the stall bread.
Then he got sent to court then sent to jail in Australia. They had to build their own jail, while he was building he was recruited to build a house on top of a hill near the port. It was hard for Red because he was treated badly and he had to lift heavy tiles under the hot sun, so he decided to sneak onto a ship sailing to New Zealand.

MEET BOB

Our Class Mascot

Bob Bledisloe is our Room 12 mascot. This book is a record of his adventures. When it is your turn with Bob, you can take him home with you. During his stay, you can do whatever fun things with him you like. If you’re going on a trip, you could take him with you. Maybe you could take him to sport practices. What’s important is that you write a creative short story in the book which outlines what Bob has done with you.

It can be true or you can make it up (e.g. travelling in time to Rio Olympics). Be as creative as possible. You can use pictures, photos or whatever you want, as long as there is some sort of story.

When you bring Bob back to school, you can share with us what you did with him.
